Malayalam Actress Abduction Case: Prosecution Submits Evidence Against Dileep

The prosecution in the Malayalam actress abduction case on Tuesday submitted more evidence against arrested Malayalam actor Dileep in the Kerala High Court.

This was the third bail application that Dileep moved in the High Court and the fifth overall. All the previous four bail pleas were turned down twice each, by the High Court and the trial court.

Counsel for Dileep argued that the police was basing the entire investigation on the statements of prime accused in the case Pulsar Suni and said “it appears that he (Suni) is like God to the police probe team”.

Dileep’s counsel strongly demanded that bail be granted. The arguments of the prosecution will be completed on Wednesday.

Dileep was arrested on July 10 for alleged involvement in the conspiracy behind the kidnapping of the actress.

The abduction took place in February, when the actress was on her way from Thrissur to Kochi.

She was taken around in the vehicle for about two hours and allegedly molested before being dumped near actor-director Lal’s home, from where police was informed.

The key accused – Pulsar Suni and his accomplices involved in the actual abduction – were arrested a week later and following detailed questioning, police unearthed an alleged conspiracy angle in the abduction and arrested Dileep.

Madhavan Joins Naga Chaitanya’s ‘Savyasachi’

Actor R Madhavan, last seen on screen in Tamil crime thriller Vikram Vedha, has landed a pivotal role in Naga Chaitanya-starrer upcoming Telugu action-thriller Savyasachi, a source from the film’s unit has said.

“Madhavan has been offered a very prominent role. He really liked the script and has already given his principal nod. Very soon, he will officially sign on the dotted line,” the source told IANS. This will be Madhavan’s first Telugu appearance in a full-length role. He has played a cameo in 2010 Telugu film Om Shanti.

Asked if Madhavan plays the antagonist, the source remained tight-lipped and added: “It’s definitely the kind of role he hasn’t played so far. It’s too early to talk about the type of character he will be essaying.”

To be directed by Chandoo Mondeti, the film will roll from October 16. The principal shooting will start after Naga Chaitanya’s marriage, which is scheduled to take place on October 6.

Savyasachi marks the second time collaboration of Mondeti and Naga Chaitanya after last year’s Premam.

‘Baasha’s Universal Appeal Is Not Surprising’: Director Suresh Krissna

Baasha, the 1995 Rajinikanth film that went on to achieve cult status among fans, was recently screened at Fantastic Fest, Austin.

Sometime in June or July 1995, when the rain gods were kind to Hyderabad, an actor and director, with a few hits behind them, were relaxing at the Banjara, Hyderabad. They went out for long morning walks, ate breakfast together, brainstormed a few ideas, and then met up again for dinner. They stayed there for a month. The actor was Rajinikanth, the director Suresh Krissna. They’d already collaborated on super-hits Annamalai and Veera, and they were in Hyderabad ideating the script of a film that continues to live in minds of cinephiles.

Even those at the recently held Fantastic Fest at Austin, said to be the largest genre film festival in the United States.

#BAASHA is everything. Rolling chair kick, electrified machete, sunset handshake, clip on sunglasses, power hip pose, Terminator theme, tweeted @foamyrokks.

@ajwimsatt said: “Everyone must watch #Baasha if they can. What a supremely entertaining movie! I just saw it at #fantasticfest”.

The organisers, in fact, wrote to director Suresh Krissna, telling him that the hall was filled with non-stop claps and whistles. But, Suresh has stopped being surprised by the reactions Baasha elicits, be it within the country or among a primarily American audience that has never been exposed to the Rajinikanth magic on screen. “When making a movie, you never think it will go on and on, and live on in people’s minds. But, with this film, soon after release, I knew it was not an ordinary but a fabulous film. Eventually, every film of Rajini sir’s got compared to this, and it became some sort of a milestone. Technology and newer audiences have kept it alive in public memory and taken it to another level,” he says.

Baasha is an example of how a loophole-free script can lift a film. Suresh had developed it in just a month. Starring Rajini and Nagma in the lead roles, the film saw the Superstar double-up as an auto-driver and a don.

“Rajinikanth sir and I would discuss moments, ideas, and then develop it on the set,” explains Suresh, “It was like a bouquet of very effective moments strung together. We would never lock the script beforehand. I enjoyed the experience. It also reflected the chemistry between directors and actors. All suggestions were considered and debated without ego hassles. He would sometimes call at midnight, saying ‘I have an idea’.”

By now, everyone’s favourite moment in the film is the “Ayya, ennoda paer Manickam. Enakku innoru panerum irukku,” [Sir, my name is Manickam, but I am also known by another name] which comes just before the interval block. Suresh has spoken often about how the film took off from this one moment. The clues given before add up, taking the reveal to another level. “I’d rate Baasha as a fine example of a good script. It has every commercial element, and a powerful story.”

Another reason for Baasha to strike a chord was that after a long gap, people got to see Rajinikanth in a role that also had shades of grey, and oodles of style. “I never doubted whether people would accept that character. Rajini sir has the kind of persona that endears him to people,” says the director.

Of course, one question that every filmgoer has is, ‘when will Suresh and Rajinikanth team up for another film to extend their hattrick of hits?’

“That’s something you will have to direct to Poes Garden,” laughs the director.

‘It Pains Me To Know A Person Can Fall So Low To Make Quick Money’: Lata Mangeshkar

Veteran singer Lata Mangeshkar is shocked at how a woman named Revati Khare allegedly duped several people using her name. The soon-to-be 88-year-old singer, speaking to Deccan Chronicle, said:

“It pains me to know that a person can fall so low to make some quick money. It pains me even more to know that my name was being used to dupe innocent people of their hard-earned money.  I can’t begin to tell you how saddened I am by how low human nature has fallen.”

According to reports, Revati Khare, a resident of Mumbai suburb Nallasopara, has been duping people by collecting donations in the singer’s name. The woman would also meet a lot of people at different events in the city, and would speak of having connections with the singer, often promising that she can get Mangeshkar to sing for them on various occasions.

As of last week, Mangeshkar had filed an FIR against Khare at Gamdevi Police station in Mumbai, under sections 420 (cheating), 465 (forgery), 468 (forgery for cheating), and 471 (using genuine as forged) of the Indian Penal Code.

The singer also told DC that she is scared of what the woman is capable of doing, considering she had photos of her and her Bharat Ratna trophy printed on letter pads, and even got her signature right.

Ilaiyaraaja Songs Removed From Smule App: Other Composers Should Also Fight For Copyright, Says Raaja’s Legal Advisor

A day after Smule, a Karaoke app, removed most of Ilaiyaraaja’s songs from its database following a notice from the composer claiming copyright infringement, Pradeep Kumar, Raaja’s copyright consultant, declared that other composers too, must claim copyright for their work.

Speaking to Silverscreen, Pradeep Kumar said: “Smule is a western company; if the same thing happens to a US-based singer, they may sue. Just because nobody claims [copyright] here, they use our songs without prior intimation. Every composer should raise his voice against this issue.”

Predictably, many of his fans are upset that they wouldn’t able to sing Ilaiyaraaja’s songs on the app. “We don’t knock at fans’doors and tell them not to listen to his songs or sing his songs,” said Pradeep, “We have asked a US-based company – that has been using his songs for commercial purposes without his consent – to remove his songs from the app. It has a feature in which people can sing to a BGM. That music is Raaja’s hard work and it has to be respected. We have sent a notice to Smule to remove his songs.”

Reiterating that the move is not against Raaja’s fans, but against a company, Pradeep Kumar added: “Ilaiyaraja sir has been entertaining his fans all these years with his songs, they have to support him in this issue rather than being upset. When you feel down, you listen to Raaja songs, If Raaja is feeling low, he cannot listen to his songs; he looks to his fans. So, their support is very crucial. Every fan should question a company if his songs are not accorded respect.”

The consultant further said: “During his heyday, Raaja used to wake up at 3 am, attend two music classes and then go to studio at 6 am to work on his compositions. He has worked hard for more than 35 years. If he has put so much effort into composing a song, a commercial company cannot use it without prior permission”

This move comes nearly six months after Ilaiyaraaja sent a legal notice to singer SP Balasubrahmanyam to stop performing his songs without permission.

‘Secret Ballot’ Producer On ‘Newton’: “Not Even A Hint Of Plagiarism”

Producer Marco Mueller feels that there was not even a hint of plagiarism in Rajkummar Rao’s Newton, amidst claims that the movie has been inspired from his 2001 Iranian film Secret Ballot.

Last week, Newton was announced as India’s official entry for Oscars’ foreign language film category. On Monday night, filmmaker Anurag Kashyap, in a Facebook post, shared Muller’s opinion after watching Newton.

On Sunday, defending the film, Kashyap tweeted:

The movie, produced by Manish Mundra of Drishyam Films, had its world premiere at the prestigious Berlin International Film Festival, where it even won an award.

Standing up for its genuinity, Kashyap said:

While Newton, which stars National Award-winning actor Rajkummar Rao, revolves around a government employee who struggles to supervise voting in a forest area of Chhattisgarh, controlled by Maoists, Secret Ballot is described as a movie which focuses on the life of a lady ballot officer who visits a barren and desolate place to plead with voters to cast their votes and take part in the elections.

Newton director Amit V Masurkar has already given his take on the controversy, saying: “The story was born from my heart. I had no idea about Secret Ballot.”

Meanwhile, meeting the film team’s expectations, Newton is attracting audiences to theatres.

Trade analyst Taran Adarsh tweeted on Sunday:

As of Sunday, the film has made Rs 6.90 crores at the Indian box-office.

Abhishek Bachchan Walks Out Of JP Dutta’s ‘Paltan’

Bollywood actor Abhishek Bachchan has reportedly walked out of JP Dutta’s multi-starrer Paltan. Confirming the news with The Indian Express, producer of the film, Nidhi Dutta, said that the actor had personal reasons for walking out of the project.

“Abhishek Bachchan is no longer a part of Paltan for personal reasons best known to him. It has come as a shock to us as this happened less than 24 hours before our unit left to shoot in Ladakh. But we also believe that especially in the movies we make, it’s the soldiers sitting up there that choose who will play them and recreate their lives on screen. Nevertheless, we wish him luck with his future endeavors.”

The makers will, however, continue filming with the rest of the cast, and will soon announce who’s replacing the actor. Much like most of JP Dutta’s films, Paltan focuses on the travails of the Indian army. “It’s time to tell a new story, to tell another part of history of our country and salute more real life heroes! I present Paltan. A film and a subject very close to my heart and I’m extremely excited about it,” he said when he first spoke about the film.

The film is scheduled for a summer 2018 release.

Abhishek Bachchan, meanwhile, will be playing poet Sahir Ludhianvi in a biopic directed by debutant Jasmeet Reen. This is the third film in which Bachchan plays a real-life character, after Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Se and Guru.

Ludhianvi was a prolific poet and lyricist responsible for songs such as Jinhe Naaz Hai Hind Par Woh Kahaan Hai (Pyaasa) and Woh Subah Kabhi Toh Aayegi (Phir Subah Hogi).

Sanjay Leela Bhansali is the producer. Work on the project is expected to begin soon.

Kerala HC Says Kavya Madhavan Does Not Need Anticipatory Bail

The Kerala High Court on Monday said the anticipatory bail application of actress Kavya Madhavan, wife of arrested superstar Dileep, was not required. The actor is not a suspect in the Malayalam actress abduction case, the HC was told by the Special Investigation Team in charge of the investigation.

With this observation, the court closed her case. At the same time, the court posted the anticipatory bail of close aide of Dileep, actor director Nadir Shah, for October 4.

The police maintained that as of now there is nothing against the actress but added that if need arises, she might have to appear for questioning, as the probe in the case is still going on.

The relief for her comes at a time when the fifth bail plea of Dileep, arrested for alleged involvement in the conspiracy behind the kidnapping, is coming up on Tuesday before the High Court.

Dileep was questioned twice and was arrested after the second round of questioning on July 10. Shah was questioned on two occasions and Madhavan once. Apprehending arrest, the two had approached the High Court last week and filed their anticipatory bail pleas.

The abduction took place on this day in February, when the actress was on her way from Thrissur to Kochi.

She was taken around in her vehicle forcefully for about two hours and allegedly molested before being dumped near actor-director Lal’s home, from where police was informed.

The key accused — Pulsar Suni and his accomplices involved in the abduction — were arrested a week later. Following detailed questioning, police unearthed an alleged conspiracy angle in the abduction and arrested Dileep.

Imtiaz Ali Pens An Emotional Post About His Experience In Kashmir

Imtiaz Ali’s love for Kashmir is very apparent. Besides shooting vast portions of Rockstar and Highway in the state, Ali has also made a short film ‘Window Seat In Kashmir’.

As part of a recent campaign to promote tourism in Jammu and Kashmir, Ali has penned an emotional post on  Hindustan Times, about his experience in the state. He dubbed Kashmir as ‘the warmest place on earth’ and began to recount an experience he had while visiting the area as a ninth standard student.

Kashmir is heaven on earth, Ali says, not just because of its scenery but also because of the warmth and hospitality of its people.

Ali wrote:

We stayed in Srinagar at the Tourist Reception Centre. There was a clerk level young man there who was helping us make our plans in Kashmir. I think his name was Irshad. Irshad must be in his twenties. Dad interacted a lot with him and he, like all Kashmiris would, went out of his way to make our trip the best. And then he really went out of his way, as I later realized, all Kashmiris would.

The clerk invited Ali and his family to his home for dinner. Ali’s father reluctantly agreed as Irshad would not take no for an answer. Instead of waiting at a bus stop for the family, Irshad travelled all the way to Sonamarg (where Ali and his family had travelled to that day) as it would make things comfortable for them.

And when he said ‘dinner’ we did not know what that meant in Kashmir. Irshad and his poor family had organized for us about which we had no idea before – the waazvaan. It’s the most lavish dinner you will ever have.

Ali says that it is because of people like Irshad that he feels like he owes Kashmiris a huge debt.

Kamal Haasan May Launch Political Party By End Of This Year

Kamal Haasan may launch his political party by the end of this year, according to a recent interview the actor gave to CNN-News 18. The actor said that he was currently taking advice from people in politics, and that there was no rush to start his political party as there was no “time limit”.

Haasan also said that his recent meeting with Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal does not mean that he is aligning with the Aam Aadmi Party.“I did not go to Kejriwal, he came to me. It was kind of him,” the actor said.

Haasan reiterated his belief that Delhi doesn’t understand Tamil Nadu. He said this was why no national party ever made it big in the state. “I love my country but it starts from my home and then from my state. There is definitely a divide between North and South India. Delhi doesn’t understand Tamil Nadu, and vice-versa. Even if there is a positive move from either side, the other views it with suspicion. This is why no national party has made it in Tamil Nadu.”

Kamal is open to working with actor Rajinikanth on an issue basis in politics. He observed that Rajini’s religious beliefs made him a ‘suitable ally’ for saffron politics, while he himself was more of a rationalist, the report said.
