5 Déjà Vu Moments: OK Kanmani Trailer and Alaipayuthey

The much-awaited trailer of Mani Ratnam’s latest – Oh Kadhal Kanmani (OK Kanmani) which was released yesterday – has taken social media by storm. What’s not to like about the sizzling chemistry between the young stars Dulquer Salman and Nithya Menen, PC Sreeram’s splendid camera work, Sreekar Prasad’s crisp cuts and AR Rahman’s catchy music?

Except, it feels like we’ve seen it all before. In Mani Ratnam’s Alaipayuthey. The five moments from the trailer that feel like they are from Alaipayuthey:

1. Dulquer Salman and Nithya Menen look at each other from opposite platforms at a railway station. Remember the scene in Alaipayuthey, where Madhavan and Shalini steal a glimpse of the other from trains moving in opposite directions?

2. “Adikadi ipdi dan ponnunga pinnadi suthuviya?” asks Nithya Menen’s Tara to Dulquer’s Adhi in OK Kanmani. In Alaipayuthey, Shakti tells Karthik, “Panakara pasanga thaan unna maadhiri velaya vittutu ponnunga pinnadi suthuvanga.”

3. We’ll get there without preamble. Notice the round vintage sunglasses? And the bus? Eerily similar. This is the scene where Shakti hints that she might be interested in Karthik, after all.

Hmmm.

4. Nithya Menen and Dulquer celebrate their love with a wild, wild drive at the beach. Alaipayuthey, too, held a moment where an ecstatic Madhavan rides his bike on the beach, shouting “ava enna paathu sirichitaa.

5. This…

We’ll let the picture do the talking.

Oh Kadhal Kanmani’s theatrical trailer releases on March 6.
