Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Padmavati: Sets Torched In Kolhapur

The sets of Padmavati in Kolhapur were vandalised and set on fire by unknown miscreants yesterday. At present, the reason behind the attack is not known.

A police report was filed on director Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s behalf, following which an arrest has reportedly been made.

This is not the first time that the sets of Bhansali’s Padmavati have been attacked. A month ago, the film’s sets in Jaipur were vandalised by Rajput Karni Sena members. The Sena alleged that the film included references to a romantic relationship between Rani Padmavati and Alauddin Khilji, which they found inappropriate.

Padmavati is heralded as a virtuous woman in certain sections of India because she refused Khilji’s advances, and chose to commit jauhar instead. Hence, suggestions of a romance between Khilji and Padmavati in the film were considered offensive by the Karni Sena.

After days of mediation, a compromise was reached after Bhansali promised that the film would not show such a scene.

Padmavati stars Deepika Padukone in the titular role. Ranveer Singh plays Alauddin Khilji while Shahid Kapur has been cast as Raja Raval Ratan Singh.
