Working Class Hero, the production banner of director-actor Dileesh Pothan and writer Syam Pushkaran, is teaming up with Fahadh Faasil’s production company again, for a crime drama titled Thankam.
Malayalam actor Joju George joined the set of director Karthik Subbaraj’s ongoing film with Dhanush in London on Friday. In a note posted on social media, Y Not Studios, the producer of the film, welcomed the actor onboard.
Rather than playing safe, Joju says he has only been trying to raise his own bar. “I consider myself a student of cinema. I still call my favourite filmmakers and ask for roles,” he admits. He played a string of lighter character roles after that, in Lal Jose’s Pullippulikalum Aattinkuttiyum, Bash Mohammed’s Lukka Chuppi and Abrid Shine’s Action Hero Biju. In 2017, he broke his on-screen image through a negative-shaded role in Ranjith Shankar’s Ramante Eden Thottam, a domestic drama.
While characters tending to a tragic past is a trope that Padmakumar has been dabbling with for quite sometime now (Shikkar, Kanal etc), it gets the most gratifying portrayal in Joseph. Joseph George (Joju George), a retired police constable living in an Idukki town, is the resident Sherlock Holmes whom the department still consults, albeit unofficially, to solve crimes.
The chief minister (Jaffer Idukki), the head of the police force and the members of a political party trying to capitalise on a friend’s accidental death sit in a place many miles away, designing an alternate truth that suits their reality. The movie opens with Praveen Michael (Kunchakko Boban), a police constable merely two months into the job, being assigned to drive sub-inspector Mani (Joju George) around.

Zakariya who directed one of the most acclaimed Malayalam films of 2018, Sudani From Nigeria, has announced his second film, titled ‘Halal Love Story’. The film features Joju George, Indrajith Sukumaran, Grace Antony and Sharaffuddeen in the lead roles.
“While working in Joseph, Joju insisted that I sing all the songs in the film, especially Poomuthole which I’d made a dummy version with my vocals. At one point, he considered including a guitar portion to lend the song a more ‘contemporary’ touch, but Joju George, the lead actor and co-producer of the film insisted that the earlier version was better.

Post the release of the movie, the actress will be joining the sets of director Martin Prakat’s next production along with actor Joju George. Actress Aparna Gopinath, who had worked in ABCD, will also be seen in a pivotal role in this film. Chemban Vinod Jose, Neeraj Madhav and Joju George will play key roles. R Unni, who created waves with film like Munnariyippu, 5 Sundarikal and Big B will pen screenplay and dialogues. Cinematographer-director Venu’s Raachiyamma is a flat adaptation of writer Uroob’s splendid short story of the same title. Kutti Krishnan (Asif Ali), the new manager of a tea estate in Wayanad, falls in love with Raachiyamma (Parvathy), a sharp-tongued dairy farmer. She reciprocates his feelings, but the man, unable to find the courage to take the relationship forward, breaks her heart. In Uroob’s work, the woman is a motif of nature that disintegrates and reconstructs itself in a perpetual cycle, responding to the time.
One, starring Malayalam superstar Mammootty and directed by Santhosh Viswanath, opens with a shot of a giant cut-out of Kadakkal Chandran (Mammootty), towering above Thiruvananthapuram, surveilling every movement of his people like an old patriarch. When a young woman (Gayathri Arun), the sister of a young boy the chief minister is fond of, is arrested by the cops on false charges, Chandran and his entourage storm into the station and saves the girl, like that old djinn who comes to the rescue of his buddies when they remember him.

Although Zakariya mentions Children Of Heaven and Cinema Paradiso at the beginning of the film, as a tribute to the medium and the anti-Hollywood world cinema, Halal Love Story is really an ode to Malabar’s Home Cinema, the micro-genre of films spearheaded by people like Salam Kodiyathur at the beginning of 2000s.
