‘Casting Me In ‘Joseph’ Was A Risky Move; The Film Could Have Failed Without A Superstar’: An Interview With Joju George

Rather than playing safe, Joju says he has only been trying to raise his own bar.  “I consider myself a student of cinema.  I still call my favourite filmmakers and ask for roles,” he admits. He played a string of lighter character roles after that, in Lal Jose’s Pullippulikalum Aattinkuttiyum, Bash Mohammed’s Lukka Chuppi and Abrid Shine’s Action Hero Biju.  In 2017, he broke his on-screen image through a negative-shaded role in Ranjith Shankar’s Ramante Eden Thottam, a domestic drama.

Joseph Review: Joju George Shines In This Crime Drama That Overtly Relies On Pathos

While characters tending to a tragic past is a trope that Padmakumar has been dabbling with for quite sometime now (Shikkar, Kanal etc), it gets the most gratifying portrayal in Joseph.  Joseph George (Joju George), a retired police constable living in an Idukki town, is the resident Sherlock Holmes whom the department still consults, albeit unofficially, to solve crimes.

Aanum Pennum Review: Nothing Exceptional In This Star-Studded Anthology

Cinematographer-director Venu’s Raachiyamma is a flat adaptation of writer Uroob’s splendid short story of the same title.  Kutti Krishnan (Asif Ali), the new manager of a tea estate in Wayanad, falls in love with Raachiyamma (Parvathy), a sharp-tongued dairy farmer. She reciprocates his feelings, but the man, unable to find the courage to take the relationship forward, breaks her heart.  In Uroob’s work, the woman is a motif of nature that disintegrates and reconstructs itself in a perpetual cycle, responding to the time.
