Aanum Pennum Review: Nothing Exceptional In This Star-Studded Anthology

Cinematographer-director Venu’s Raachiyamma is a flat adaptation of writer Uroob’s splendid short story of the same title.  Kutti Krishnan (Asif Ali), the new manager of a tea estate in Wayanad, falls in love with Raachiyamma (Parvathy), a sharp-tongued dairy farmer. She reciprocates his feelings, but the man, unable to find the courage to take the relationship forward, breaks her heart.  In Uroob’s work, the woman is a motif of nature that disintegrates and reconstructs itself in a perpetual cycle, responding to the time.

Theevandi Review: A Hollow Comedy-Drama That Takes A Beaten Track

The film makes it seem like an entire village and even the politics of the land is invested in the life of this young protagonist.  In a whimsical turn of events, the political party which has a ruling MLA, decides to attach its destiny to Bineesh’s nicotine addiction.Once the initial curiosity that the young chain-smoker generates dies down, and the film enters its core, it becomes a drab.  It spends the rest of the running time by playing to cheap seats through scenes that cash in on the newfound superstar-status of its lead actor, Tovino Thomas.

The Many Moods Of Rain In Malayalam Cinema

In the film, a tale of two star-crossed lovers, there is rain as a witness to every crucial event in the couple’s life.  The visuals in the film, captured by Jomon T John, are stunning, yet the magic that was seen in Thoovanathumbikal is absent in Ennu Ninte Moideen, for here the rain looks like an element of production design, added to the film to make it glossier.

The Sathyan Anthikad Interview: “It Hurt When ‘Pingami’ Flopped”

Isn’t it commonsense to not copy the story of a recently released super-hit film, that too, one directed by my friend’s son?  My favourite part in Jomonte Suvisheshangal comes in the second half, when the father and son live like friends. Some of my best films were not superhits at the box-office.  TP Balagopalan MA, for one, despite being a good film, only broke even.

Ramante Eden Thottam Review: A Delightful Sojourn

In Ramante Eden Thottam, love binds them both, making them happier and livelier than ever.  It helps Malini rediscover the artiste in her, and it prompts Raman to set up a mobile tower inside his Eden, so that he can exchange sweet and short text messages with her. This sequence is full of laughter and love, without a sense of foreboding.  The film’s most beautiful song “Akale Oru Kaadinte” plays in this part, lending the background for Malini’s breakaway from a monotonous life, towards something meaningful and enriching.
