“Thank you all for sending prayers and love on the sad demise of my father, who was the sole reason and support for me to venture on such a difficult journey which got me everything that I dreamt of! Eternally grateful to you all,” read Bajpayee’s tweet.

Bajpayee’s father died on Sunday at a hospital in Delhi following a prolonged age-related illness. He was 83. His funeral was held at Nigam Bodh ghat in New Delhi that same afternoon.

His son was in Kerala shooting for an upcoming project at the time and rushed to Delhi immediately to perform his father’s last rites, Bajpayee’s spokesperson said.

According to the news agency PTI, Bajpayee’s father was hospitalised in September. In a statement to the agency, the actor’s spokesperson said his condition was very critical during the days before his demise.

Several celebrities from the Hindi film fraternity, as well as authors, writers, and journalists, shared their condolences on social media following the demise of Bajpayee’s father.

Sharing a picture of Bajpayee and his father from a few years ago, filmmaker and lyricist Avinash Das wrote: “Manoj Bhaiya‘s father is no more. Missing the moments spent with him. I took this picture in Bhitiharwa Ashram. He was a man of great endurance. Always kept himself away from the touch of the son’s opulence. Homage.”
