‘Moothon’ Wins Two Awards at Indo-German Film Week in Berlin

Moothon, the bilingual film written and directed by Geetu Mohandas, bagged the Audience Choice award at the Indo German Film Week 2020 that recently concluded in Berlin. The film also won actor Roshan Mathew the award for Best Supporting actor.

Moothon was the closing film at the Indo German Film Week, while Pareeksha (directed by Prakash Jha and starring Adil Hussain) was the festival’s opening film.

The film’s cast lineup includes Nivin Pauly, Roshan Mathew, Shashank Arora, Sanjana Dipu, Sobhita Dhulipala, and Melissa Raju Thomas. The film is internationally known as The Elder One.

Mohandas developed the script for Moothon as part of Sundance Screenwriters Lab. The film is co-produced by Anurag Kashyap, who has also written the Hindi dialogues in the film.

The film bagged the Best Film award at the New York Indian Film Festival and was nominated across four categories. Nivin Pauly won the Best Actor award while Sanjana Dipu won the best Child Artist award for the film at the festival. The film also won the Best Film and Jury Prize at the South Asian Film Festival. The film had been received a good response at the Toronto International Film Festival.

Moothon, shot predominantly in Lakshadweep and Mumbai, tells the story of Mulla, a 14-year-old boy, who sets out in search of his brother Akbar. This is Mohandas’s second feature film after her directorial debut Liar’s Dice, which won the Bronze Alhambra at the Granada Film Festival Cines del Sur. The actor-turned-director had also directed a short film Kelkunnundo in 2009.

Nivin Pauly, was last seen in the film Love Action Drama, alongside Nayanthara. Roshan Mathew recently made his Bollywood debut with the Netflix original Choked: Paisa Bolta Hai, directed by Kashyap. He was last seen in Malayalam film C U Soon alongside Fahadh Faasil.
