Two weeks after the release of Padmaavat and Bhaagamathie, the films continue to reign at the box-office – not just in India, but abroad as well. Last week, within days after its release, Padmaavat crossed the Rs 100 crore margin.
Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s epic drama, which was scheduled to release on December 1, officially released on January 25, with premiere shows on January 24. The film earned Rs 56 crores in India within three days, making Rs 5 crores on Wednesday, Rs 19 crores on Thursday, and Rs 32 crores on Friday. In New Zealand, the film made Rs 76.10 lakhs on the first two days. In Australia, the film made Rs 4.65 crores on the first two days, while UK made Rs 2.34 crores. In Germany, too, it has managed to make an impact, earning Rs 52.45 lakhs on the first day.
A week later, Padmaavat’s earnings show a massive jump, with the box office numbers indicating that it might cross the Rs 200 crore mark soon. In India alone, the film crossed Rs 192.50 crores on Sunday.

Bhaagamathie, the trilingual thriller directed by G Ashok with Anushka Shetty in a powerful role as an IAS officer named Chanchala, has also been doing well. As of last week, the film nearly made a million in the USA.

Meanwhile, another film that continues to make enough waves at the box office despite it being more than a month since its release is Salman Khan’s Tiger Zinda Hai. Having completed its seventh week in India, the film has so far earned Rs 338.34 crores.
Other films:
This week witnessed the release of four Tamil films with Vijay Sethupathi’s being the bigger one. Oru Nalla Naal Paarthu Solren, also starring Gayathri, Gautam Karthik, and Niharika Konidela, has mostly received negative reviews. The film’s box office numbers aren’t out yet, but it is speculated that it had a good opening day.

Madura Veeran, a Jallikattu-inspired movie which was earlier set to release during Pongal, has received mixed reviews. The number of screenings for this film were fewer compared to Oru Nalla Naal Paarthu Solren.

Padaiveeran, starring Bharatiraja and Vijay Yesudas, has received mixed reviews too. But considering it was released on the same day as a Vijay Sethupathi film, it did suffer in terms of number of screens and box office collection. The official numbers aren’t out yet.

Hey Jude, which marks Trisha Krishnan’s debut in Malayalam cinema, has been getting positive reviews. The film has had a massive opening all across India, with more than 50 multiplexes screening the films apart from those in Tamil Nadu and Kerala.
