IIFA 2018: Making Sense Of The Green Carpet Looks

At the IIFA this year, Bollywood stars sashayed down the red carpet in all their finery, only in this case it’s called the green carpet. An attempt to sound different, you say? Maybe.

The International Indian Film Academy rolled out its “green carpet” for Bollywood stars this year at Bangkok’s Siam Niramit theatre. To honour the green carpet and be more eco-friendly (and make a statement about it as well), the IFFA decided on flying in metres of specially grown Brazilian grass from the Netherlands.

We wish.

It was probably just skid-proof green fabric.

At the entryway, the actors were grilled about their pet social causes, their upcoming releases, even their favourite fragrance and other banal stuff which makes you wonder what is the purpose of it at all. This year’s IIFA was all about the celebrity stylists who toil to make their muse look good. If the look is a red carpet hit, then you should be googling the name of the stylist and not ogle at the celebrity.

Here are the top looks:

Shraddha Kapoor channeled her inner Cinderella in a gown everybody agrees is straight out of a fairy tale. It was a Reem Acra gown if you must know.

Rekha made a slight departure. Instead of sticking to her trademark Kanjivaram saris, she wore a shimmering Manish Malhotra sari and complimented with a pair of peep-toe heels.

Kriti Sanon, on the other hand, walked the green carpet in an asymmetrical gray gown. It looked stiff, and was probably not too fun to wear. The Mark Bumgarner gown looked pretty but overwhelming.

Ranbir Kapoor, Anil Kapoor, Arjun Kapoor, Ritesh Deshmukh, Anupam Kher, Rishi Kapoor all probably shopped from the same store. Pardon the glibness, but finer things like cuts and fabrics and cuff-links are lost on us.

Radhika Apte kept it simple in a royal blue off-shoulder gown. Again, a dress chosen with Bangkok’s humid weather in mind. A designer friend tells me that the whole look ‘flows’ well. Whatever that means. A little research will tell you that it’s an Amit Aggarwal gown.

Karan Johar spent the whole IIFA weekend wearing one oversized frat boy shirt after another. He paired them all with X-Men style glasses.

For the awards event though, he took inspiration from Thor: Ragnarok’s Grandmaster.

The suit had black accents and was probably designed with a little flexibility, in case Johar wanted to show off his dancing skills.
