In Theatres This Week

As Oh Kadhal Kanmani and Kaanchana 2 are running to packed houses, there are three new contenders vying for the same kind of response. This week in Tamil Cinema, the audience has plenty to choose from. The Saamy directorial Kangaroo will release alongside the interestingly titled Yoogan, and Iridiyam.

Kangaroo, we’re told, is Samy’s first clean U film (that’s saying something). The director’s last attempt Sindhu Samaveli focussed on the illicit affair between a man and his daughter in law. This time around, Samy has decided to focus on the always effective brother – sister sentiment, with Arjuna and Varsha Aswathi stepping in to play the lead roles. The director apparently decided to make a ‘clean’ film when his mother asked him the reason he continued to make controversial movies. “My family has always stood by my choices, but even they’d had enough by the time Sindhu Samaveli released. My mother asked me..actually, challenged me to make a pure film. That’s when I decided that I would make a modern day Paasamalar. I promise you all – this film is meant for all the caring mothers out there.”

Samy also admitted in a recent interview that his next step hinges on the response to this film. “I’ve stepped out of my comfort zone to make this film. If it doesn’t click with the audience, then I’ll go back to making the kind of films that comes easily to me.”The music for the film has been composed by popular Singer Srinivas and produced by Suresh Kamatchi.

Yoogan, meanwhile, is described as a horror/suspense thriller set in an IT company, an as yet unexplored space.  Techies can breathe a sigh of relief as a reliable source tells us that missing deadlines or other such corporate stuff does not make the horror portion of the film. Instead, the film will include supernatural elements, made all the more scary by the team’s use of make up over VFX. Says Kamal G, the film’s director, “I’ve produced this film as well as directed it. The decision to use realistic makeup was propelled not because we didn’t have funds but because we wanted to make a completely organic movie. Yashmith and Sakshi have done a bang up job on this film. It’s sure to thrill you!”

Kamal G also doubles up as film editor. He has worked on films such as Vu, and Onnume Puriyala. The music, meanwhile, is one area Kamal has left to the experts. Rashaanth Arwin has composed the film’s soundtrack while Alex Premnath is in charge of the background score.

Iridiyam on the other hand is no sci fi thriller, atleast from the looks of its trailer. Directed by Sai Mukundhan, the film has heist elements, with a section of its cast trying to loot the kalasams from nearby temples. The Sathuranga Vettai hangover not withstanding, the film hopes to be a ‘action packed’ film with a social message at its core. Starring Aarushi, Mohan Kumar in lead roles, the film sees a limited release in theatres tomorrow. “We’re planning on adding more screens after the first few days of audience response.” says producer Thazhai M Saravanan.
