It’s just a week since Valentine’s Day went by, and the weekend offers a bouquet of films falling under various genres. Choose form comedy, romance, horror and more. Most popular among tomorrow’s releases is Hindi film Welcome To New York, followed the Tamil-Malayalam bilingual Keni, based on the struggle for water. Read on to decide your choice of weekend viewing.
Welcome To New York (Hindi)
The film, written and directed by MA Nishad, stars Jayaprada, Revathy, Archana, Parvathy Nambiar, Anu Hasan and Rekha in the lead, besides Parthiban. The movie deals with the issue of water scarcity in Kerala and Tamil Nadu. The movie captures the lives of people in the districts of Kollam in Kerala and Tenkasi in Tamil Nadu. The film marks the return of Jayaprada to the Tamil screen after a gap of a decade.
After a gap of 27 years, two legends – K.J Yesudas and S.P Balasubrahmanyam – from the music world collaborate for the movie. They last sang together in Mani Ratnam’s Thalapathy (1991) for the song Kaatukkuyilu Manasukkula, composed by Ilaiyaraaja.
Earlier in an interview with The Times Of India, director Nishad said that the movie tries to convey the importance of water. “In the film, a well becomes the source of conflict; it is one of the characters,” he said.
6 Athiyayam (Tamil)
Releasing this weekend, this Tamil movie is an anthology of horror stories. The film has been directed by six directors – Sridhar Venkatesan, Lokesh Rajendran, Suresh Eav, Ajayan Bala, Shankar Thiyagarajan and Cable B Sankar and will feature Kishore Kishy, Thaman Kumar, Cable B Sankar and Sanjeev in the lead.
There are two more Tamil movies lined up for the weekend – Kaathadi and Yenda Thalaiyila Yenna Vaikala. Kaathadi is said to be a comedy directed by Kalyaan. The film stars Avishek Karthik and Sai Dhakshina in the lead, while John Vijay and Sampath Raj play supporting roles.
Yenda Thalaiyila Yenna Vekkale is a horror-comedy directed by newcomer Vignesh Karthik, and stars Azhar, Sanchita Shetty and Eden Kuriakose.
Ira (Malayalam)
Ira stars Unni Mukundan in the lead, and will also star Gokul Suresh, son of Malayalam actor Suresh Gopi. The movie directed by newcomer Saiju SS is said to be a thriller. In an interview to The New Indian Express, actor Unni Mukundan said “It has a great script. Ira is a small-yet-wonderful movie.”
Sudani from Nigeria (Malayalam)
Directed by newcomer Zakariya, the film taps into Kerala’s favourite game of football. The film stars Soubin Sahir and Nigerian actor Samuel Abiola Robinson in the lead.
