Weekend Watch: ‘Solo’, ‘Chef’ And More

The weekend is almost here, and so are the films that many have been looking forward to. Unfortunately, as of October 4, the shutters will be down at theatres in and around Tamil Nadu due to a strike protesting against double taxation. This has affected the release of Tamil films like Vizhithiru.

Solo

Even Bejoy Nambiar’s Tamil/Malayalam bilingual Solo was forcibly pulled out of theatres due to the strike, which the director even apologised for on social media.

The film will, however, play for a day in Tamil Nadu, after which the licence will be taken away until further notice.

Starring Dulquer Salman in four roles, Solo is an anthology that will delve into the lives of four characters — Siva, Rudra, Shekhar, and Trilok. The female leads include Neha Sharma, Sai Dhanshika, Sruthi Hariharan, and Arthi Venkatesh, along with other actors in the anthology including, Suhasini Maniratnam, Nasser, Dino Morea, Anson Paul, Soubhin Shahir, Sai Tamhankar, Q, and more.

In an interview with Silverscreen, Bejoy reveals a bit about his not-so-typical Malayalam film. “It’s not a typical Malayalam film, although it has a typical Malayalam hero who has got a target audience – the youth. I am pretty confident that the stories that I am trying to say will find resonance with them.”

The film has music by Prashant Pillai, Thaikkudam Bridge, Masala Coffee, Gaurav Godkhindi, Agam, Filter Coffee, Brodha V, TaalAtma, Abhinav Bhansal, Sooraj Kurup and Sez. The album has 22 songs in Malayalam, Tamil, Hindi and English.

Chef

Ary, the son of chef Roshan Kalra (Saif Ali Khan) and dancer Radha Menon (Padmapriya), wants his father to attend a school function. But because of work, Roshan declines but tries to make up for it. We then get visuals of the two in Kerala, having rice and curry on a plantain leaf at a roadside shop.

The trailer gives us a peek into the father-son relationship and the journey they embark on for the best chole bhature.

The film is based on a Hollywood film of the same name, starring Jon Favreau, Sofía Vergara, John Leguizamo, Scarlett Johansson, Oliver Platt, Bobby Cannavale, Dustin Hoffman, and Robert Downey Jr.

In an interview with Silverscreen, Padmapriya reveals more about her role. “She’s a girl who marries young, but once the marriage ends, she returns home with her son. She lives her life, does not nag, and has a high-art social circle. I could get that; I’m also the kind of person who will never be tied down just because I have kids. But, Radha is also extremely considerate and does things for her ex that one might normally not see. And, so, it was a challenge to perform her. But, these traits also allowed for more nok-jhok between Saif’s character and mine.”

Directed by Raja Krishna Menon, the film also stars Padmapriya Janakiraman, Dhanish Karthik, Shyan Munshi, Chandan Roy Sanyal, and Canadian-Indian comedian Russell Peters. It is produced by Bhushan Kumar, Vikram Malhotra and Bandra West Pictures.

Other movies that were supposed to release: Vizhithiru

Meera Kathiravan, director of Vizhithiru, starring Viddharth, Krishna, and Sai Dhanshika was not ready for the ongoing protest, that has stalled the release of his film. “I had tried to release my film twice before and it didn’t happen. I was determined to release it this time, however, the TFPC’s Friday announcement came as a big blow to me,” he said.

A D V E R T I S E M E N T

The audio and teaser launch had happened way back in 2015, and the movie, which was expected to release then, was pushed indefinitely.

T Rajendar has a cameo appearance in a dance number in the film. The actor recently courted controversy after he berated Dhanshika for not thanking him at the film’s recent press meet.

Music is by Sathyan Mahalingam, and cameraman-turned-director Vijay Milton handles cinematography.
