The Weekly Round-Up : August 3 to 9, 2014

Six-packs and selfies galore. Also, some news to keep it a little professional. Everything that happened the past week in Tamil cinema.

Sunday: Of Rajini and Kamal

Sunday began on a super note. Popular television actor Rajkamal was the latest to join Lingaa and shared some interesting details about the flick. Naturally, he had a lot of selfies from the shoot – and was kind enough to share a couple with us. Kamal Haasan received a lifetime award to add to his collection, this time from the Chennai Chamber of Commerce; actress Dhanshikaa signed on for a weighty role in Samuthirakani’s Kitna while Vinoth Kishan talked about his part on Andhagaaram. At the end of the day, we watched a re-run of all the award events and totally picked the winner in every round.

Monday: A Protest, and Some Pictures

Several Tamil film celebrities took part in the Director Union’s protest against the Sri Lankan government, and director SP Jhananathan cancelled the shoot of Purampokku to make it to this event. We also learnt that the makers of the biopic Ramanujan were taking the film all the way to Hollywood; Suhasini might direct a short film while Jigarthanda producer Kathiresan acquired the remake rights of the Rajinikanth classic Moondru Mugam. And, AR Murugadoss gave the Tamil film industry yet another director – his assistant

Tuesday: Dhanush, Vidyut…and more Vidyut

Dhanush put an end to the rumours once and for all; we got to speak to Night Show director Ashwin who told us all about Nayanthara’s role in the film ; Suriya officially announced his next film and we finally found out about the guy behind the phenomenon that is Chanceyilla (Hint : He also directed this STR – Varalxmi film).

Silverscreen Special of the Day : Vidyut Jammwal talks to us about taking hits and getting back up on his feet. Also, some nice pictures of the actor in In the thick of things

Wednesday: Six-pack, Subhashkaran, and a Silverscreen Special

Actor Jayaram joined Masss; Trisha teamed up with her Something Something co-star Jayam Ravi for a new film; Sarabham actress Salony Luthra spoke to us about her controversial role in the film and Kaththi producer Subhashkaran opened up about  the many controversies surrounding his film. Thursday: An Audio Launch and Other News

The Dhanush – Vetrimaaran film finally got a title (albeit a tentative one). And, Parthiepan advanced the release of his Kathai Thiraikkathai Vasanam Iyakkam to August 15. In a news that is sure to make Kamal Haasan fans happy, we learnt that the shoot of  Uttama Villain is nearing completion. Also, everybody’s favourite villain/sometime-dad-actor Kishore signed on to star in a period film.

Silverscreen Special of the Day : Our new weekly feature, Keeping it Short, where interesting people from the industry tell us their story, but keep it short (hence, the innovative title). Last week it was the Sarabham hero, Naveen Chandra.

A D V E R T I S E M E N T

Finally, Sigaram Thodu had its audio launch and we were there to help document it for posterity. Ok ok, so we just went to look at Kamal Haasan, Dhanush, Vijay Sethupathi and possibly, take some nice pictures.

Friday: A Hero and a Boxer

Vikram Prabhu earned his hero credentials with a daring rescue while Siddharth went on a thanksgiving spree; Samantha Ruth though, did something very very endearing. In the most exciting news of the day, nay week, the original chocolate boy, Madhavan’s comeback flick Irrudhi Suttru finally went on floors (where he plays a boxer), and Shruti Haasan sang for Sonakshi Sinha’s Tevar (we wanted to call it Kamal Haasan Daughter Sings for Rajinkanth’s Heroine, but our editor nixed the idea).

Also, we heard that the gangster musical Jigarthanda might go to Bollywood. To no one’s surprise really, as the movie is getting rave reviews from not only the audience but also a score of popular directors.

Saturday: Anjaan, Bosskey, and Abhishek Bachchan

In news that surprised nobody, the Bosskey Twitter account was found to be fake; the Anjaan team went on a revolutionary path and told us why; Samuthirakani became a baddie for Suriya and Abhishek Bachchan announced his Chennai visit .

Silverscreen Special of the Day : The Sigaram Thodu audio launch report where everybody keeps their speech short except this actress, who obviously didn’t get the memo. Read more in Out of the Ordinary.

Sneak Peek From the Future:

We didn’t go to the movies this week, but we did do this awesome photoshoot with actress Salony Luthra from Sarabham who reminded some people of Deepika Padukone and some of Angeline Jolie. A hard choice to make so…
