9 Trailer Review: A Taste Of The Strong Visuals To Come In This Horror Film

Prithviraj Sukumaran’s new movie 9 is a testament to the actor’s love for cinema and novelty. Given that the movie is a horror thriller – a genre most leading men stay away from, the actor has ventured into it for the third time and that too within a span of 2 years after Adam Joan and Ezra.

Directed by Jenuse Mohammed, who had previously directed the light-hearted romantic comedy 100 Days of Love, 9 features Prithviraj as Albert, a single father. Incidentally, the actor last portrayed a similar character in Vellinakshatram, a horror film. Mamta Mohandas plays his late wife and Alok plays Adam, Albert’s gifted son.

Apart from suggesting that the title refers to the number of days, the trailer does little in terms of divulging information. Piecing together the posters and the trailer, it can be assumed that the story has a supernatural connect. There have also been reports that say the movie has a science fiction angle to it.

The trailer then primarily serves the purpose of showcasing the strength of the movie: its visuals. From Abhinandan Ramanujan’s camerawork to superior visual effects, the scale of the movie is unprecedented, at least in Malayalam cinema. Shooting locations mostly involve hill stations like Kuttikkanam and Manali

9 marks Prithviraj’s debut as a solo producer. Until now, the actor has been producing movies under the banner of August Cinemas, which has Santosh Sivan, Shaji Natesan and Arya are partners. Together they have made movies like Urumi, Double Barrel and The Great Father.

Sony Pictures International makes their foray into Malayalam with the movie.

The movie also stars Prakash Raj, Rahul Madhav and Wamiqa Gabbi in supporting roles. Both Prakash Raj and Prithviraj have acted together in the Tamil films Mozhi, Velli Thirai and the Malayalam film Anwar.

9 releases on February 14.
