Alibaba Pictures – the filmmaking subsidiary of the e-commerce giant Alibaba – will produce the film version of the video game The Legend of the Ancient Sword. To be directed by Renny Harlin, the filming of this project is expected to begin this October. Alibaba Pictures did not reveal the budget but described the film as “substantial by Chinese standards.”
Comparing the Chinese language action fantasy film to the Harry Potter franchise, Harlin said, “This is a big, epic fantasy adventure. My ambition is to integrate this Chinese property with Hollywood story-telling and visual effects and to introduce new fighting techniques.”
Harlin recently completed the Jackie Chan-starring action adventure ‘Skiptrace’ which will be released in Chinese theatres on July 22.
