A 40-year-old Chennai-based businessman has been arrested in connection with a complaint filed by actress Amala Paul. The actress, who lodged a complaint with the T Nagar police on Wednesday, said that a man had made sexual advances towards her while she was practising for a dance programmme to be held in Malaysia.

“He was unpleasant, and spoke as if he was engaged in some trade, and wanted sexual favours. I was shocked and humiliated,” she said, “I was alone then and I suspect insider involvement as he knew I would be there at that time. I felt extremely unsafe; I am an independent working woman and I didn’t want to let this go.”

The actress said that the incident took place at the dance studio of Sridhar Master in T Nagar, but he wasn’t around at that time. “I had been rehearsing there for three days for an event called ‘Dazzling Tamizhachi’ which is to take place in Malaysia. It’s a women-empowerment show.”

According to The Hindu, the Chennai police have arrested Alagesan of Kottivakkam under sections 354 A (sexual harassment) and 509 (uttering any word or making any gesture intended to insult the modesty of a woman) of the Indian Penal Code, and also section 4 of the Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Harassment Against Women Act.
