Where Anubhav Sinha Gives It Back To The Trolls

The trailer of Mulk, released recently by Rishi Kapoor and Taapsee Pannu, who are part of the cast, almost instantly struck a chord with viewers; simultaneously, its seeming criticism of the government invited trolling and other accusations from “patriots”. In a note that director Anubhav Sinha posted on Twitter earlier today, he said he pitied people who feel compelled to display their hate online. And that the film is not “about [your] masters.”

Speculations are rife that the trailer attracted so much right-wing hate because the film is based on a real-life story about a Muslim family that is forced to prove its loyalty to India after one of their members is found involved in a terror plot.

Sinha, in his note, said, “You don’t have a name or face. Your family can’t tell anyone what you do. Your parents aren’t proud of you, your sister isn’t, your brother isn’t and the worst, YOU DON’T HAVE A FUTURE. You will be dumped.” He compared trolls to a “lonely loudspeaker on a pole,” and that their clamouring was not going to change anything.

Part of the noise about the film comes from all kinds of allegations about who produced it; Sinha clarified this by saying the film is not produced by Dawood Ibrahim or the Congress or the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh. “No it is not funded by Dawood Ibrahim. You can ask him. Not even Congress. You can ask Rahul. Not even RSS. You can check with Mohan Bhagwat Ji. It is funded by Mr Deepak Mukut and his father Mr Kamal Mukut, a veteran in his business.”

After strongly condemning the trolls, the note also invited them to watch the film, because it just might be that they may like the film. “It is about you and it is about me and mostly it is about us,” said Sinha in his note.

The film’s lead, Taapsee Pannu, has also reacted to Sinha’s tweet saying, “Whoa !!!!!! Just a small little hint from the man who wrote the dialogues in our film #Mulk Give it a read…. you will know the level of writing you going to witness on 3rd of August!”

The film is produced by Banaras MediaWorks and Soham Rockstar Entertainment, and will be released on August 3, competing with Karwaan and Fanney Khan.
