Speaking to Mid-Day, Ayesha declared that she doesn’t subscribe to his regressive opinions.

“When people are in the public eye, they are questioned for their choice of words. A difference in mindset and generation gap is the issue. There is a difference of opinion which is fine. As a celebrity, I take it in my stride that I am expected to harbour an opinion even on something I didn’t say,” she said.

She further added that these things happen at all homes.

“I have moved past that phase, because as a family, we have made peace with the fact that we cannot agree with each other on everything.”

Abu Azmi, president of the Maharashtra state branch of the Samajwadi Party (SP), is notorious for his sexist and insensitive remarks. Soon after the infamous mass molestation in Bengaluru on New Year’s Eve, Azmi said that women are to be blamed for getting molested.

“In these modern times, the more skin women show, the more they are considered fashionable. If my sister or daughter stays out beyond sunset celebrating December 31 with a man who isn’t their husband or brother, that’s not right. If there’s gasoline, there will be fire. If there’s split sugar, ants will gravitate towards it for sure,” he said on record.

Ayesha and her husband, Farhan, condemned Azmi’s statements.
