“I Don’t Fear The Comparison To ‘Once Upon A Time In Mumbai'”: ‘Baadshaho’ Director Milan Luthria

The teaser of Baadshaho, Milan Luthria’s film on the Emergency period, was released today. The director told PTI News that he doesn’t have a problem with the comparisons between this film and his 2010 gangster thriller, Once Upon A Time in Mumbaai.

“Even if people feel the hangover of Once Upon A Time in Mumbaai looking at Baadshaho it’s okay. I don’t fear that comparison as both the stories are completely different,” he said.

While the director claimed that the story is different, the cast of Baadshaho is eerily similar to the 2010 film, indeed. The two male characters in Baadshaho are incidentally the same as Once Upon… with Ajay Devgn and Emraan Hashmi in the lead again.

In 1975, former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi imposed a two-year long emergency across the country. The film is set in that period. The film also marks the fourth collaboration between Devgn and Luthria, the others being Kachche Dhaage (1999) and Chori Chori (2003). Ankit Tiwari is composing the score and soundtracks, and the film will have a worldwide release on September 1 this year.

Another film on the Emergency is scheduled for a release. Indu Sarkar, directed by Madhur Bhandarkar, is set in the latter part of the Emergency. The film stars Kirti Kulhari, Neil Nitin Mukesh, Supriya Vinod, and Anupam Kher. The film will release on July 28.
