Box Office Report: ‘PadMan’ Opens To A Decent Start; ‘Kalakalappu 2’ Leads In Chennai

R Balki’s PadMan, starring Akshay Kumar, reportedly made Rs 10.26 crores on Friday in India. The film, which tries to initiate a dialogue on menstrual hygiene, is a biopic on Coimbatore-based entrepreneur A Muruganantham. The movie gained mostly positive reviews, and trade analyst Taran Adarsh predicted a good weekend for the film.

Akshay Kumar plays Lakshmikanth Chauhan, a character based on Muruganantham, from a village in Madhya Pradesh. What begins with him watching his wife (played by Radhika Apte) struggle with menstrual hygiene, turns into a revolution of sorts with Pari (played by Sonam Kapoor) coming on board to spread the message on periods and hygiene in rural India. The film has music by Amit Trivedi and Komail Shayan and cinematography by PC Sreeram.

Kalakalappu 2, directed and written by Sundar C, and starring Nikki Galrani, Jai, Jiiva, Shiva, and Catherine Tresa, has reportedly been leading the Chennai box office. While the official numbers are not out yet, it is said to be doing better than the other Tamil films released on the same day, including Savarakathi and Sollividava.

Savarakathi is said to be a quirky film with two filmmakers – Mysskin and Ram – on screen. Having garnered good reviews, the film is the other Tamil release that appears to be doing well in Chennai. Directed by Mysskin’s brother GR Adhithya, the film also stars Shamna Kasim (aka Poorna) in the lead with music by Arrol Corelli.
