Mersal (Tamil)

A film that has been pegged as the most-awaited one in Kollywood, Vijay’s Mersal finally released on Diwali. A few days since its release, and the whole country is already talking about it. What began with people comparing similarities between Atlee’s film and the Kamal Haasan-starrer Aboorva Sagodharargal, it has now become a political controversy, with Tamil Nadu BJP opposing the criticism of GST and demonestisation in the film.

Starring Vijay in triple roles, the film has a star cast of Samantha Ruth Prabhu, Kajal Aggarwal, Nithya Menen, Vadivelu, and S J Suryah. With music by AR Rahman, it has the distinction of being Thenandal Film’s 100th project.

The film opened to a record-breaking box-office collection in Tamil Nadu. According to a report in Forbes, first day collection was approximately Rs 31.3 crore. With Rs 18-19 crore gross collection in Tamil Nadu alone, Mersal is now next to Rajinikanth’s Kabali, which collected Rs 23.5 crore in Tamil Nadu on its opening day last July.

Overseas, also Mersal is doing a great business. Mersal beat the opening day grosses of Dangal and Raees in the United States, and as of Wednesday, it was approaching a $500,000 total there. Openings in other territories were at or near record levels, with the UK tallying £94,311 (₹ 81 lakhs), Malaysia scoring MYR 586,665 (₹90.3 lakhs), and Australia A$33,057 (₹ 68 lakhs),” reported Forbes.

According to trade analyst Taran Adarsh, Mersal is “collecting more than the two Hindi releases in some key international markets.”
