Cartoonist Charles M Schulz’s Documentary, Who Are You, Charlie Brown? To Release on Apple TV+ on June 25

Who Are You, Charlie Brown? the documentary special on the American cartoonist Charles M Schulz is set to premiere on Apple TV+ on June 25, the streaming platform announced on Friday while releasing the trailer.

Schulz, who created the popular comic strip Peanuts featuring the character Charlie Brown, was born on November 26, 1992, in Minneapolis. Before making his career in arts, Schulz served in the US Army during World War II. 

Schulz made his debut as a cartoonist with Li’l Folks, a comic strip that appeared on a local newspaper called St Paul Pioneer Press between 1947 and 1950.  Later, he created Peanuts which appeared in many newspapers between 1950 and 2000. Besides Charlie Brown, who is usually nervous and lacks self-confidence, the comic strip featured characters like Snoopy, Franklin, Lucy van Pelt, Linus van Pelt, Peppermint Patty and Sally Brown.

According to Apple TV+, Who Are You, Charlie Brown? will feature interviews with Jean Schulz, the wife of Charles Schulz; actors Drew Barrymore, Paul Feig, Noah Schnapp and Keith L Williams; journalist Al Roker; filmmaker Kevin Smith; radio host Ira Glass; graphic designer Chip Kidd; cartoonists Lynn Johnston and Robb Armstrong, among other friends, family members and fans. These interviews will be interweaved with a new animated story that follows Charlie Brown on a quest to discover himself.

Who Are You, Charlie Brown? celebrates the significance and global multi-generational popularity of the comic strip and its timeless artistry and design to profile the man whose simple characters would touch the lives of millions through the decades and become beloved cultural icons,” the streaming platform stated. 

Narrated by Academy Award Winner Lupita Nyong’o and hailing from Imagine Documentaries and WildBrain, Who Are You, Charlie Brown? is executive produced by Brian Grazer, Ron Howard, Sara Bernstein and Justin Wilkes of Imagine Documentaries, Josh Scherba, Anne Loi and Stephanie Betts of WildBrain, Craig Schulz and Paige Braddock of Peanuts, and Michael Bonfiglio, who has also written and directed the documentary. 

The documentary’s music is composed by Jeff Morrow, who has scored the music for the Apple TV+ series The Snoopy Show, Snoopy in Space and Peanuts in Space: Secrets of Apollo 10.

Schulz succumbed to cancer on February 12, 2000, and in 2002, the Charles M Schulz Museum and Research Center was established in California with the mission to preserve, display, and interpret his art. As a tribute to the legendary cartoonist, starting in 2004, Fantagraphics publication house released a series of 26 books titled The Complete Peanuts, comprising the entire run of Schulz’s comic strips.
