On International Women’s Day, the people of Tamil Nadu woke up to the news of a pregnant woman who was killed in Trichy due to the violence of a police officer.
34-year-old Usha, a teacher for children of special needs, was travelling with her husband on a bike last evening when a policeman told them to stop as they were not wearing helmets. According to reports, her husband Raja was looking for a suitable spot to pull over when the cop, assuming that they were trying to get away, kicked the bike.
Usha, who sustained a severe head injury, died on the spot while her husband was grievously wounded. They were taken to the hospital where Usha was confirmed dead by the doctors; she was 12 weeks pregnant.
The News Minute reported that following the incident, protests broke out at the spot, leading to traffic snarls on the Thanjavur-Trichy National Highway for a few hours. Police officials had to visit the place to pacify the agitators.
The incident provoked strong reactions across the state, with many taking to social media to document their anger. Kollywood celebrities too, decried the violence and demanded action against the cop.
Police are the protectors..but when they behave like goons n unleash their supressed frustrations, it’s time for them think and introspect..very saddened by the death of a pregnant woman who was manhandled n pushed by a cop..no words can ever ease the pain of the loved ones.#RIP

Heartbroken at the tragedy of two horrific deaths in #Trichy. Mother & baby deserved to live a full life. Enough of callous & careless approach to life & dignity. Let us all make the change happen
