#ChennaiGives: Suriya, Jyothika, Jayam Ravi And Dulquer Support International Charity Day

To commemorate International Charity Day on September 5, actors Suriya, Jyothika, Trisha, Jayam Ravi and his wife Aarthi, Dulquer Salmaan, Vikram Prabhu, Sriya Reddy, director Soundarya Rajinikanth and her husband Ashwin, and Chess Grandmaster Vishwanathan Anand decided to donate several items to support the campaign. September 5 was adopted as the International Charity Day by a UN resolution in 2012 because it is the day of the passing of Nobel peace prize winner Mother Theresa.

The Chennai-based celebrities are using the hashtag #ChennaiGives, which has been trending since yesterday. More actors are likely to join the campaign soon. Jointly organized by Madras Round Table-1 and Uber Chennai, the charity campaign encourages people to donate clothing, shoes, books, school supplies like pens, notebooks, backpacks and crockery items, all packed in a bag. Uber will be using an UberGIVE feature through which donors can have their bagged items picked up by an Uber cab. The cab might also have a volunteer who will click a picture of the donor with their permission to share on social media.

Jayam Ravi, speaking to Deccan Chronicle said, “I believe in the saying ‘what goes around, comes around’ — hence, I felt that it’s better to donate or give away used products than to waste them. I was excited when I heard about the campaign and decided immediately to do my part for the same. This social service is something that many people can afford and indulge in easily.”
