A biopic on deceased pro-wrestler Chris Benoit is finally moving forward after rumours about it being in the works got around in 2013. The film will be directed by Lexi Alexander who is known for her work on Television series such as Supergirl, Arrow and Limitless. The movie titled Crossface for Benoit’s signature wrestling move, ‘Crippling Crossface,’ is currently in the pre-production stage. The film’s script based on Matthew Randazzo’s 2008 book Ring of Hell: The Story of Chris Benoit & the Fall of the Pro Wrestling Industry.
Chris Benoit was a controversial figure in pro-wrestling. He attained fame and his first WWE World Championship in 2004, at the age of 36. Three years later, he was found dead at his Georgia home, along with his wife – and former on-screen manager – Nancy and his 7-year-old son Daniel. This was eventually confirmed to be the result of a double murder/suicide, with Benoit killing his wife, son, and himself over the course of a weekend. The deaths quickly became a national news story, with evidence suggesting that years of on-ring head injuries had played a factor in Benoit’s horrific actions.
In 2013, reports surfaced that claimed actor Liev Schreiber had been approached to play Benoit in a biopic based on him. He denied it, and the film had been languishing as a mere idea until Lexi came on board. Filming is likely to begin in early 2017. Actors Tom Hardy, Chris Hemsworth, Channing Tatum are rumoured to be in the running to play Benoit. With a majority of the film being set in and around the WWE championship matches, there is a possibility of guest appearances by some of the major WWE wrestlers of that time.
