Daniel Day Lewis To Play Dressmaker Charles James In His Last Film

Daniel Day Lewis, who recently announced that he was retiring from acting, will play dressmaker Charles James in his last film, unofficially titled Phantom Threads.

According to PageSix, Lewis has been planning to retire for over three years, but wanted one last film, to “go out with a bang”. The film, Paul Thomas Anderson’s Christmas 2017 release will see Daniel Day Lewis play the legendary British fashion designer Charles James. The film is set in the 1950s and revolves around the British fashion world at the time. Lewis will play “an uncompromising dressmaker commissioned by royalty and high society”.

Many sources report that Daniel Day Lewis – one of the finest method actors of his generation – has extensively researched the part. In the ’90s, he had taken a break from films to work in an Italian shoe factory.

According to a Variety article, Charles James retired from fashion while at his peak, at the age of 52. Variety speculates that Lewis, who is also at his peak, and 60 years old, identifies so much with his character that he wishes to retire from his profession.
