Danseuse Mrinalini Sarabhai Passes Away

Danseuse and Padma Bhushan winner Mrinalini Sarabhai breathed her last on Wednesday morning at a private hospital in Ahmedabad.  She was 97, and is survived by her daughter Mallika and son Karthikey, who is the founder of Centre for Environment Education (CEE).

Mrinalini Sarabhai, who studied at Shantiniketan under Rabindranath Tagore, was trained in Bharathanatiyam, Kathakali and Mohiniyattam. Poet, writer, environmentalist and a teacher to over 18000 students, Sarabhai was one of the first Bharathanatiyam dancers to venture into choreography. She founded the Darpana Academy of Performing Arts.  She was married to Dr Vikram Sarabhai, the chief architect of India’s space programme.
