Deepika Padukone Denies Engagement Rumours – Another Instance Of Gender-Biased Media Scrutiny

Deepika Padukone was forced to deny rumours of her engagement with actor Ranveer Singh at a fashion show. Deepika Padukone, stunning in an off the shoulder maroon lehenga, walked the ramp for Designer Manish Malhotra at Couture Week. The actress’ bridal outfit sparked a flurry of questions about her wedding plans and she said, “There’s no such plan anytime soon. I’m not pregnant, I’m not having a baby, I’m not engaged and I’m not married. And I’m not even planning to get married anytime soon.”

In contrast, Fawad Khan, another showstopper for the event, was asked about his ramp walk debut. Media speculation on the personal lives of female celebrities is not new. Women in the spotlight are subject to biased standards of scrutiny as opposed to men and are frequently forced to answer questions about relationships, breakups, and pregnancies, while the men get to speak about work. Despite starring in a Hollywood film, and fronting several successful Bollywood productions, Deepika is not exempt from this biased media gaze.

As in the case of Tennis ace Sania Mirza  who revealed recently that the media chose to ask her questions about her personal life, over her professional achievements.“That’s the question I face all the time as a woman, that all women have to face. The first is marriage and then it’s motherhood. Unfortunately, that’s when we’re settled, and no matter how many Wimbledons we win or number ones in the world we become, we don’t become settled. But eventually, it will happen, not right now. And when it does happen I’ll be the first one to tell everybody when I plan to do that,” she said.
