The teaser of the film released on Thursday. Diary is produced by S Kathiresan under the Five Star Creations banner and co-produced by Sekar Babu.

Pandiyan, who has previously assisted filmmaker Arivazhagan and is one of the co-writers in the upcoming Vikram-starrer Cobra, is making his directorial debut with Diary.

“This was not supposed to be my debut film. I had planned to do another film called Motorcycle Diaries in 2017 with producer Kathiresan sir. But since it did not take off, I was working on Cobra. Later, Arul sir offered to collaborate,” he said.

Speaking about the story of Diary, Pandiyan said “There is a line that comes at the beginning of the teaser, about how time cannot be stopped but it can stop us anywhere it wants. That is the crux of the film. Most of the story takes place at night.”

Pandiyan said it was a 2018 news article that inspired him to write Diary. The incident in the news, that appeared in December, 2018 was further developed and fictionalised, to build the story, he added.

Speaking about the title, Pandiyan said that a sequence involving a diary will play a pivotal element in the film.

Besides Arulnithi, the film also features Pavithra Marimuthu. The duo essays the roles of police officers, who will be investigating the murder. “There is no romance in the film. Most of the content is about the investigation,” he added. The film also features comedian Chaams, Kishore, Jayaprakash, along with newcomers.

Diary is currently in the final stages of post-production, with CGI (computer graphics) and re-recording works being carried out. Ron Ethan Yohann has composed songs for the film.

Pandiyan said that he hopes to release his debut film in theatres. “In about two months, all the work will be completed. But, it is up to the producers to see when and where to release the film,” he said.
