‘Enna Vittu Eangadi Ne Pona’ Review: Recreating The Classic Harris Jayaraj Mood

Dev Movie Stills Starring Karthi Sivakumar, Rakul Preet Singh

Composers in Tamil cinema each have their own style, and this is instantly recognizable. Harris Jayaraj too has his, and this song Enna Vittu Eangadi Ne Pona from the Karthi-Rakul Preet Singh starrer Dev creates the classic Harris Jayaraj’s mood.

The hero misses his love partner, so one can expect the song to come right after a tiff between Karthi and Rakul Preet. The magic comes from the voice of legendary singer SP Balasubramaniyam, and the lyrics by Kabilan Vairamuthu.

SPB sings, “Ennai thethi pola nee kizhithalum, dhinam vaazhthum vaasagam naane”  – and we believe it. The hero says you may strike me out like the dates on a calendar, but I will still wish you daily. This is the whole idea of the song: the guy who doesn’t give up on his girl, despite being hurt so many times. He wants her back again. Interestingly, the composer-lyricist-singer trio did this earlier, in Suriya’s 7 am Arivu with Yamma Yamma song. Many lines from both song match – if not in words, but in mood. That which Karthi’s brother experienced in 7 am Arivu, Karthi experiences in Dev.

Directed by debutant Rajath Ravishankar and produced by Prince Pictures, the film has Karthi and Rakul Preet Singh in the lead for the second time after their successful combo in Theeran Adhigaaram Ondru, directed by H Vinoth. Expected to be a road trip film, Dev is said to have inspired from the life 1983 Cricket World Cup winning Indian captain Kapil Dev. The film also stars Prakash Raj, Karthik, Ramya Krishnan, Amrudha and others.
