Author of A Song of Ice and Fire Series and producer of the television show Game of Thrones, George RR Martin, has a deal with the producers of Universal Cable Productions for a new drama series based on his novella Nightflyers.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, NBCUniversal-owned Syfy are looking to include more science fiction shows.
Nightflyers is based on the author’s 1980 novella and the 1987 film of the same name, set in the future on the eve of Earth’s destruction. The story follows a crew of explorers who journey on the most advanced ship in the galaxy, the Nightflyer, to intercept a mysterious alien spacecraft. But things might not be as they seem when they realise that the artificial intelligence “captain” might be steering them into deadly place.
Picked up to pilot in June after being put into development in May, Nightflyers‘ production on the pilot has already begun with the casting yet to be confirmed.
Jeff Buhler of Jacob’s Ladder’s fame is the scriptwriter, and executive producer along with Gene Klein (Suits), David Bartis (Mr. and Mrs. Smith) and Doug Liman (Suits), Alison Rosenzweig and Michael Gaeta (Jacob’s Ladder) of Gaeta Rosenzweig Films, and Lloyd Ivan Miller and Alice P Neuhauser of Lloyd Ivan Miller Productions. Robert Jaffe, who wrote the feature film based on Martin’s novel, is set as a producer. Martin is not involved as he is currently a part of HBO’s co-writing team for Game Of Thrones‘ follow-up season.
