In ‘OM’, Bharathiraja Plays A Young Girl’s Knight In Shining Armour

P Bharathiraja And Others At The Kaatu Paya Sir Intha Kaali Audio Launch

Bharathiraja plays a writer who saves a young girl from suicide in his upcoming directorial OM. He says that the film is about a writer who writes under the acronym,OM (Bharathiraja). He travels to London on work where he meets the girl (played by Nakshatra). He saves her and asks her to join him on a 10 day trip, to help her understand what life is all about forms the crux of the film.

The movie does not have anything to do with the Hindu religion, he said. In a recent Deccan Chronicle interview, the director said:

“People ask me if OM reflects the scared sound or spiritual symbol of Hindu religion. No! OM is an acronym of ‘Old Man’, which denotes me in the film.”

Bharathiraja observed that most directors these days opt for fair-skinned women from Mumbai or Kerala.

“Of late I don’t see many Tamil speaking girls in Tamil cinema. These days, directors opt to import white skinned girls from Mumbai and even from Kerala, but they are not ‘my’ ladies. Nakshathra is my friend’s daughter and I felt she was apt for the lead in OM. Moreover, I always like to mould raw talents to suit my script,” he said.

Ask him if he plans to work with anyone from the current generation and Raja says he likes Nayanthara, Dhanush and Simbu but working with them might be a tough task.

Bharathiraja says that he is not in the mood to make sequels to his earlier films.  “A cult classic like 16 Vayadhinile cannot be remade, or even a sequel or part 2 to it is something inconceivable.”

The movie was launched in 2014. At the time Bharathiraja said that the old man in the film acts young while the young woman is wise beyond her years. Dismissing any similarities with his previous film – Mudhal Mariyadhai, he said that OM was more light-hearted and less ‘darker’.

OM is scheduled to release later this year.
