John Luther, the upcoming Malayalam film starring Jayasurya in the lead role, went on floors on September 2 in Vagamon, Kerala. In a conversation with Silverscreen India, Abhijit Joseph, writer and director of John Luther said that Jayasurya will play the role of a cop in the thriller film.
“Jayasurya plays the titular role. He is a sincere and dedicated circle inspector. The story revolves around the incidents and issues faced by this police officer,” he added.
John Luther is produced by Thomas P Mathew and Christeena Thomas under the Alonsa Films banner. Actor Athmiya Rajan who is known for her performances in films like Joseph, Maarconi Mathaai and Manam Kothi Paravai, will play the female lead role in John Luther. The film also features Siddique, Sreelakshmi, Drishya Raghunath, Sivdas Kannur and Deepak Parambol, among others.
Noting that John Luther is a performance-driven character, Abhijith said that he first pitched the story to Jayasurya. He added that the actor was interested in the story and agreed to be part of it. “Later I reached out to many producers and one of them, Thomas, was happy with the subject and came on board.”
The film, which was supposed to go on floors in March 2020, was delayed due to the Covid-19 induced lockdown. According to Abhijit, the film, which is currently under production, will be shot in Vagamon and Ernakulam. “If everything goes according to plan, we will be able to wrap up the shoot in 56 days,” he said.
Abhijith said that it took two years to finish the script for John Luther and around five years to begin the film’s production.
“Previously I was working on a different script. However, it did not take off due to various reasons. After that, I had been wanting to make a cop film. And I am a person who gets story ideas and threads while travelling. One day in 2016, while I was travelling from my home in Wayanad to Ernakulam for work, I got the idea for John Luther,” he added.
John Luther’s technical crew includes cinematographer Roby Varghese Raj, music director Shaan Rahman, editor Praveen Prabhakar and art director Ajay Mangad.
