‘Kaatrin Mozhi’ First Look: Jyothika Presents ’10 Commandments For Women’

The first look poster of Kaatrin Mozhi was released by Suriya Sivakumar. Jyothika, the film’s protagonist is seen holding a placard that lists ’10 commandments for women’. These commandments, though simple and straight forward, are surprisingly banal.

Take for example the commandment, ‘thou shall show that all men are women are equal’ – women have been fighting for equal rights because the patriarchal society is structured in a way that denies them agency. Women know they are equals, of course. It’s the men who need to be reminded from time to time.

Take another example: This commandment, thou shall not turn the other cheek if your husband hits you,’ – it’s baffling why one would think that even one cheek would be available for the husband to hit. Through this poster, the makers of Kaatrin Mozhi want to show an empowered woman, just like the film’s protagonist. Sulochana in Tumhari Sulu was aware of her rights, she was just waiting for the right opportunities and for people around her to realise her potential. Sulu didn’t need any saving.

The poster of Kaatrin Mozhi in a way makes an effective point about the boundaries or expectations that society and women place on themselves. It remains to be seen how Jyothika’s character shapes up in Kaatrin Mozhi which is the Tamil remake of Tumhari Sulu.

The Hindi film had released last year on November 17. The film is about a middle-class woman, who takes up the job of a late night radio jockey.

The film, directed by Radha Mohan, is in its post production stage and is slated to release on October 18. While Jyothika plays Vidya Balan’s role, actor Vidaarth will be seen in Manav Kaul’s role and Lakshmi Manchu will be playing Neha Dhupia’s role from the original. The film also stars, Kumaravel, M S Bhaskar, Manobala, Mohan Raman, Uma Padmanabhan, Seema Taneja, Sindhu and others. While music is composed by A H Kaashif, lyrics are by Madhan Karky.
