Kadamaiyai Sei: SJ Suryah & Yashika Aannand Starrer is a Mixed-Genre Film with an Emphasis on Thriller Elements

Kadamaiyai Sei, the upcoming Tamil film starring filmmaker-actor SJ Suryah and Yashika Aannand, is a mixed-genre film with an emphasis on the thriller elements, says the director of the film, Venkattragavan, in a conversation with Silverscreen India.

The first look of Kadamaiyai Sei was released by actor Sivakarthikeyan on social media on Thursday. The film is produced by TR Ramesh and S Zahir Hussain.

It is the second directorial venture of Venkattragavan, who has previously helmed Muthina Kathirika (2016), starring Sundar C, and has often collaborated with the latter as a dialogue writer.

Referring to certain visual cues in the first look poster, the director says, “We wanted to show that SJ Suryah’s character is a soft person, but has also got another side. So we overlaid his image with that of a lion. Lions hunt only when they are hungry and we wanted to show that this character has the same quality. He has a positive role in this film.”

The poster also features what appears to be an ECG reading at the end of the title, and Venkattragavan reveals that there will be some hospital-based events in the film. “Instead of an interval and climax twist, the film has a twist in every reel,” he adds.

Speaking about Yashika, the filmmaker says, “She is usually seen in glamorous roles. However, here we have broken that stereotype and she is shown as a housewife and the mother of a four-year-old. It is a performance-oriented role, particularly in the second half of the film.”

Apart from the lead actors, (Motta) Rajendran, Vincent Asokan, Charles Vinoth, and Mohan Vaidya also play pivotal roles in the film.

“I had the one-liner of this story in mind for quite a while. It’s a film that will appeal to audiences from 6 to 60 years of age. It is a clean comedy and family entertainer with all the elements of a commercial film, including family sentiments, comedy, action, and romance,” says the filmmaker.

Venkattragavan began to script the film towards the end of 2020 and took about three months to complete it, along with the dialogues.

Kadamaiyai Sei went on floors in February but was halted in between due to the second wave of the Covid-19 pandemic. Filming was later resumed in May and subsequently wrapped up. The editing and dubbing works have been completed and the film is currently in the final stages of post-production.

The music director of Kadamaiyai Sei is Arunraj, and Venkattragavan reveals that he has composed three songs for the film.

The director says the team is looking to release the film towards the end of the year.
