AR Rahman tweeted a picture of Kamal and himself at his studio yesterday and said that his next is a magnum-opus. He did not reveal the name of the film, and it led to speculations that Kamal was reviving the other big budget Sabaash Naidu which he announced earlier.

The actor later made the news official and tagged Raaj Kamal Films and Lyca Productions. He said, “Thanks ARR for strengthening the team with your participation. Very few projects feel good and right even as we develop it. Thalaivan Irukkindraan is one such. Your level of excitement for the project is very contagious. Let me pass it on to the rest of our crew.”

Kamal and AR Rahman last worked together 19 years ago on director KS Ravikumar’s Thenali.

In the 2000s, Kamal worked on the story of this film for six years, and said that it was an action-thriller about politics, finance and the underworld. He planned shoot locations in Mumbai, Delhi and the US and started pre-production work by 2008. Actors Venkatesh, Mohanlal and Rishi Kapoor were approached for various roles, but the project had to be shelved later because of financial issues.

The film was revived in 2015 and Kamal said he will be directing it, and it will also be made in Hindi as Amar Hain. Reports said he planned to play the antagonist in the Hindi version, and Saif Ali Khan was approached for the lead role.

The shoot is now likely to begin by this year end and reports say that a release can be expected next year. This is yet to be officially announced.

Kamal Haasan currently has a busy schedule as the host of Bigg Boss Tamil 3, and will start shooting for director Shankar’s Indian 2 in August. Sources say that all his other projects will begin only after Indian 2.
