Kamal Haasan: ‘Sabaash Naidu Will Not Glorify Caste’

Kamal Haasan At The 'Idhu Nammavar Padai' Album Launch

Kamal Haasan, in an interview with Tamil daily Ananda Vikatan, said that he is not glorifying caste pride through Sabaash Naidu. “Yes, the film does have the name of a caste in it. But the intent is not to glorify caste. Even MR Radha wrote dialogues bearing caste names. But we all know that he was staunchly against the system. Forty percent of the film has been completed. We don’t have any plans to change the title.”

The actor said that his political career will not affect his ideologies. “I cannot change my birth. I am who I am. That said, I am not proud of my birth nor am I ashamed of it. Now I am a rationalist. It is my stand and it will not change wherever I am. I will not change and I will not pressure anybody to change as well.”

This statement comes after the actor was criticised for his tweet: “I refused to fill in the caste and religion column in both my daughters’ school admission certificate. That’s the only way, it will pass on to the next generation. Every individual should start contributing for progress. Kerala started implementing the same. Those who do should be celebrated,” when asked about his stand on caste issues. Later, a Twitter user uploaded an interview of his daughter, Shruti Haasan, in which she  identifies herself as an “Iyengar”.

On Viswaroopam 2, he said. “It is not completely political, but it does have some political ideas. This version will focus more on love and family. First film was based in India, but for the second – we have come to India. The film is a commercial one but with a strong story.”

The actor also revealed that he tried to mend the relationship between singer SP Balasubrahmanyam and music composer Ilaiyaraaja. The issue began when Ilaiyaraaja sent a legal notice to SPB asking him to stop using his compositions for live concerts. “Both of them are my elder brothers. I have tried to intervene, and for my efforts, I was smacked. Twice! Both of them have more experience and talent in the music field. Wouldn’t they know better?” he said.

Kamal Haasan’s Viswaroopam 2 is set to release soon. The movie has Kamal, Pooja Kumar, Andrea Jeremiah in lead roles with music by Ghibran.
