Kathukutti: Comedy Entertainer Plus Thanjavur Uprising

Journalist turned director Era Saravanan has confirmed that his debut directorial Kathukutti,  starring Narain, Soori and Srushti Dange, will release on October 1, along with Puli. The filmmakers are looking to release the film in approximately 240 theatres, but Puli’s popularity might lead to fewer screens. Kathukutti is a full-fledged comedy entertainer set in Thanjavur, and will show the people’s successful agitation against the methane project in the Delta region.

Taking about the film, actor Narain said, “After Mugamoodi, I started receiving serious negative roles. I didn’t want to be typecast and was very keen on working in a different genre. After listening to the story for just 20 minutes, I decided that Kathukutti would be my next film. Working on the film was like being a part of Chithiram Pesudhadi.”

Director Saravanan added that Soori initially gave the team only 12 days of his callsheet, but after working for a couple of days, he decided to allot 32 days. Actress Sandhya will have a cameo appearance in a dance sequence with actor Soori.

Kathukutti’s cast includes Jayaraj (director Bharathi Raja’s brother) as Narain’s father, Gnanavel, Raja, Kadhal Saravanan, Sitthan Mohan, Thulasi, Maaran, Devipriya, Arpudhan Vijay and Kasali.

The Great Eastern Energy Corporation Ltd (GEECL) had initially obtained permission from the DMK government in 2010 for a coal-bed methane extraction process. After stiff opposition from Cauvery delta eco-conservationists revolving around fears that the project would ruin agriculture in the Thanjavur and Tiruvarur regions, the State government had blocked the project. The company was forced to wind down its operations in the area by end 2014.
