Confirming the news, Niranjan Hiranandani (Chairman, Priyadarshni Academy) said “The academy has been giving this distinguished award ever since it was established, and this year, the jury has unanimously nominated Katrina for the Smita Patil Memorial Award for her work in films.”

The Priyadarshni Academy is an NGO engaged in socio-cultural and education activities. It has been holding the awards event since 1984.

The award has earlier been bestowed upon actresses like Deepika Padukone, Aishwarya Rai and Urmila Matondkar. Katrina Kaif has been in cinema for about 15 years now. While she is one of the top-billing actresses in the industry, acting is not her forte. She has often been criticised for her lack of acting skills and her poor command over Hindi. Her winning an award associated with Smita Patil, who was one of the most acclaimed actresses in Indian cinema, has not gone well with the Twitterati, who went on to troll the decision, and Ms. Kaif, after the award was announced.

This person made quite a convincing comparison

Katrina Kaif, whose latest release Baar Baar Dekho has been receiving negative reviews, has begun training hard for her next film Tiger Zinda Hai. The film is a sequel to the 2013 film Ek Tha Tiger and will star Salman Khan in it.
