Krrish 3 Plagiarism Case: Uttarakhand HC Quashes Rakesh Roshan’s Plea

The Uttarakhand High Court on Tuesday refused to maintain filmmaker Rakesh Roshan’s writ petition seeking quashing of an FIR against him. The FIR filed by Roop Narayan Sonkar accuses the filmmaker of plagiarising his story to make the film Krrish 3. Saying that Roshan’s petition was not maintainable under the section it was filed, Justice U C Dhyani asked him to file a fresh writ petition under article 226, if he so desires, within 10 days to seek the court’s intervention in the matter.

In December 2015, over two years after the film’s release, novelist Roop Narayan Sonkar accused Rakesh Roshan of stealing his story and filed a police complaint against the director, under the Copyright Act. Sonkar claimed that he had written a novel named Suardan in 2010 and had subsequently sent the novel to many film makers – including Rakesh Roshan. He claimed that in his novel, he had envisioned a new species of mutants named maanvar. This was also the main plot of Krrish 3 where the antagonists Vivek Oberoi and Kangana Ranaut played maanvars. Sonkar claimed that Roshan had used his story without obtaining his permission.

This is not the first time that plagiarism charges are being made against Krrish 3 and its makers. In October 2013, Uday Singh Rajput, a resident of Sagar district in Madhya Pradesh, filed a petition claiming he had written a script titled Krrish-2 which was a sequel to Krrish – 1. He also demanded a compensation of Rs. 2 crores, but the Mumbai High Court quashed the case.

Krrish 3 is a 2013 Bollywood superhero science fiction film produced and directed by Rakesh Roshan. It was the third installment in the Krrish series following Koi… Mil Gaya (2003) and Krrish (2006). The film has Hrithik Roshan, Vivek Oberoi, Priyanka Chopra, and Kangana Ranaut in the lead roles.
