It collected about Rs 75 lakh in Chennai city and about Rs 1.77 crore in the Chengalpattu region, the source added. The Chengalpattu region, that stretches from East Coast Road toll booth to Red Hill, is said to be the biggest territory for the Tamil film industry box office.

Maanaadu, written and directed by filmmaker  Venkat Prabhu, and backed by producer Suresh Kamatchi under the V House Productions banner, opened in about 600 screens across Tamil Nadu.

It is to be noted that Maanaadu is the first Tamil film to hit the screens after the Tamil Nadu state government announced that vaccination is mandatory for those visiting public spaces such as cinema theatres. The film’s producer, Suresh, had written to the government to reconsider its decision. While not much response was yielded for the makers on that front, a day before the scheduled release of the film, there was confusion hovering around the release date. The morning shows (5am) were cancelled due to financial issues, but resumed from 7.30 am on Thursday. The delay in delivering KDM (Key Delivery Message) as a consequence of the financial issues, delayed the morning shows.

Maanaadu was first slated to release for Diwali, but had opted out of the race.
