Makers Of Big Budget Films Have A Monopolistic Attitude, Says Producer G Dhananjayan

Producer G Dhananjayan lashed out at the producers and distributors of big budget films and tweeted that these films are eating into the market share of smaller films. He added that small budget films fight for movie shows as most of the screens are often occupied by the big budget films.

The producer, who is backing Jyothika’s Kaatrin Mozhi, tweeted recently:

He also tweeted that several small budget films, scheduled to release on September 21 and 28, are competing with big budget films and pointed out that it’s not a level playing field.

It should be noted that Dhananjayan is the distributor of the Samantha Akkineni-starrer, U Turn, directed by Pawan Kumar. The film, made on a moderate budget, competes with Sivakarthikeyan’s Seema Raja. Both the films released on Ganesh Chaturthi.

Dhananjayan told Silverscreen, “Makers of small budget films come under tremendous pressure especially when the bigger films book all the screens. There are 1,000 screens, they don’t have to occupy each and every one of them. For example, in towns like Cuddalore, you don’t need three screens for the same film. Instead of saying that all the screens should have my film, they can have two and one can be allotted to a smaller film. Saying that all shows and screens should be ‘mine’ is not a fair game. Saying that only my film should run in the city is like a monopolistic attitude.”

Saying that it is challenging for producers to survive the situation, he added, “Many films don’t stand a chance against this monopoly. That’s the reason why I have tweeted. The person who releases the film will have command over the theaters and he will dictate the terms. Nobody can survive if this attitude of greed persists.”

Meanwhile, post-production work on Kaatrin Mozhi is in its final leg. It has a total run time of 140 minutes. “The film is slated to release on October 18. If there is any issue, we will take a call accordingly.”
