Mersal is the title of Vijay’s 61st film as an actor. Within minutes of the announcement, the title began to trend on social media. Meanwhile, there was also some debate as to whether the film’s title is a Tamil word.
In Tamil Nadu, films with Tamil titles and a U certificate get exemption from entertainment tax.

A spokesperson for the film told Silverscreen, “Yes, we are very sure ‘Mersal‘ is a Tamil word. It reflects the spirit of the film, which involves a man who tries very hard to uphold his traditions and Tamil culture. So, there’s not a chance that we can even use a word from another language to describe this.”
The whole debate could also become moot sometime soon, as the implementation of Goods and Services Tax would make the entertainment tax, and its existing rules and regulations a thing of the past.
Mersal has Vijay, Nithya Menen, Samantha, Kajal Aggarwal in the lead roles. Directed by Atlee, the film has music by AR Rahman and has the distinction of being Thenandal Studios’ 100th film.
