As per a report by The Times of India, Hazra will be seen playing the role of a Special Task Force (STF) officer and Banik will be portraying the role of his wife.

Speaking about his role and the film’s plotline, Hazra said: “In the beginning, we get to see that five closest of friends (Sam, Xo, Ricky, Ivy, and Jhora) disappear during a trip on a mysterious beach of Gokulpur. These five students are not just from rich families, but one of them has a political background and is a brother of the state youth minister. And the story takes a turn from there. I play the character of Anjan Sengupta, a cop from Special TaskForce (STF), who gets deputed for the missing case. Subratada plays the character of a local police officer Inspector Maity who is an unpredictable character, as we see he keeps hiding the testimonies. A number of questions arise as Anjan gets deeper into the case. Are they still alive or has anyone murdered them? Have they concealed themselves as they might have done something hideous? Is any drug supplier linked with them? The film revolves around all these questions. Added to that, I also feel that the audience will like Darshana and my on-screen pairing.”

Coincidentally, the film shares its name with the 1976 film (Mrigayaa) by Mrinal Sen, a pioneer of New Wave Cinema and award winning director Mrinal Sen. The film launched actors Mithun Chakraborty and Mamata Shankar and went on to win two National Film Awards.

Clarifying that the two films are unrelated, director Bhattacharjee told The Times of India: “This project has no connection with the Mrinal Sen’s classic Mrigayaa, nor is it a remake. The term mrigaya in my film literally translates into the chase or the hunt and my film’s storyline talks about hunting in every sense- physical, psychological, and social.”

Film critic and trade analyst Taran Adarsh shared news of the film on Twitter, and wrote that the film will go on floors from November 19. It will be shot in Odisha, apart from Kolkata.

The film will be bankrolled by STDS Entertainment.

Hazra was last seen in the 2019 film Bibaho Objijaan and has Bhoy and Magic in the pipeline.

Banik was last seen in the 2019 film Hullor. Also seen in Telugu film Aatagallu (2018), she will make her debut in Hindi films with the Emraan Hashmi-starrer Ezra.
