Mumbaikar: Actor Vijay Sethupathi to Debut in Hindi Films With this Santosh Sivan Directorial

The title of the Hindi remake of the Tamil film Maanagaram, which marks the Hindi debut of Tamil actor Vijay Sethupathi, was unveiled by filmmakers SS Rajamouli and Karan Johar on Friday.

Directed by Santosh Sivan, the film is titled Mumbaikar.

Mumbaikar will also feature actors Vikrant Massey, Tanya Maniktala, Sanjay Mishra, Sachin Khedekar, Hridhu Haroon, and Ranveer Shorey in the lead roles, alongside Sethupathi.

According to Amazon Prime Video, Maanagaram, which was Lokesh Kanagaraj‘s directorial debut, was a hyperlink cinema connecting four youngsters from different walks of life. It starred Sundeep Kishan, Sri, Regina Cassandra, Charle, Munishkanth, Madhusudhan Rao, Vivek Prasanna, and others and was produced by SR Prabhu. The Tamil film focussed on Chennai as one of the major characters in the film, where the backdrops become a prominent part of the story. The names of the protagonists in Maanagaram are not mentioned through the film.

In Mumbaikar, Sethupathi will be playing the character that was played by Sundeep Kishan in the original film- a youngster who comes to Chennai from his village for an interview.

Mumbaikar is produced by Riya Shibu and music will be composed by Prashant Pillai. Besides direction, Santosh is also in charge of the film’s cinematography.

Apart from Mumbaikar, Sethupathi also has another Hindi project in the works- an action web series directed by filmmaker duo Raj Nidimoru and Krishna DK, popularly known as Raj & DK. The film also stars Shahid Kapoor.

Aamir Khan and Kareena Kapoor Khan‘s upcoming film Laal Singh Chaddha, the Hindi remake of Tom Hanks’ 1994 Academy Award-winning Hollywood film Forrest Gump, was initially supposed to be Sethupathi’s Hindi debut. He backed out of the film over scheduling issues, according to his publicity manager. 

While Mumbaikar is scheduled to release in theatres, an official release date has not yet been announced.
