The trailer of Neeya 2, a horror thriller written and directed by L Suresh, starring Jai in the lead, released on Friday. Pegged as a take-off from the 1979 film Neeya which starred Kamal Haasan, the new film features Varalaxmi, Raai Laxmi, Catherine Tresa and Jai.
The film is produced by A Sridhar under the banner of Jumbo Cinemas. The two minute trailer promises an engrossing tale, a violent love story laced with the usual commercial elements, romance and songs. Going by the trailer, the film may also have a good visuals effects. A 22-ft serpent is said to have an important role in the film’s story.
As seen in the trailer, the three female leads seem to be ‘nagin’, and the reason for their fight for Jai remains a suspense. The makers reportedly traveled to different destinations in India and Thailand before finding the right snake in Bangkok. The trailer also features Bala Saravanan in an important role.
While there were many speculations about the film being a remake of the earlier one, the director in a conversation with Silverscreen said, “Neeya was a very path breaking film when it released in the seventies. It was iconic. Our intent is not to remake the movie and that’s why we have titled our film Neeya 2. We have taken some plot elements from the first film for Neeya 2. That’s all. The new movie is a violent love story. We have used some special effects for the movie.”
It is also said that the iconic ‘Orey Jeevan Ondre Ullam’ song from Neeya has been given a new twist for Neeya 2. “We got the rights of the song from the original composers Shankar-Ganesh. Music director Shabbir has given the song a makeover and it will be one of the highlights of the film,” Suresh said.
The theatrical rights for the film in Tamil Nadu have been acquired by Screen Scene Entertainment Media Entertainment. Music for the film is composed by Shabir, cinematography is by Rajavel Mohan, and editing is by Gopi Krishna.
