The 93rd Academy Awards, which was held on Monday, saw Chloe Zhao’s Nomadland winning three big awards– best picture, best direction, and best actress in the leading role. She became the first Asian woman to win the best director’s award.

The Father, Judas and the Black Messiah, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, Soul, Mank, and Sound of Metal, followed with two wins each.

However, owing to the Covid-19 pandemic, very few were in attendance to witness the historic win. The Oscars opted for an in-person event unlike its counterparts’ virtual ceremonies, with restrictions in place. The event was primarily held in Los Angeles at Union Station and an additional event at the Dolby Theatre with Regina King as the host.

The evening began with Zhao’s first big win- award for Best Direction, presented by Parasite director and Zhao’s predecessor Bong-Joon Ho, and Sharon Choi. Parasite was the first foreign language film to win the Best Picture Award in 2020.
