Padmavati Row: Shekhar Kapur Defends Sanjay Leela Bhansali; Karthi Interested In Theeran’s Sequel

Shekhar Kapur Thinks Bhansali Wouldn’t Intentionally Rake Up A Storm

Bandit Queen director Shekhar Kapur has come to fellow director Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s defence saying that the director wouldn’t have intended on raking up a storm with his epic drama Padmavati. Speaking at the International Film Festival of India in Goa, Kapur said:

“The intention of the filmmaker (Bhansali) was not to create controversy. He is a great filmmaker. But he has never been a political filmmaker. He wanted to make a great film, a big film. There is a faction divide in our society, which is very obvious, because India is a society (which) is in absolute and definite flux. All the lines which were drawn once are breaking. The politics has risen around the film but the film has nothing political in it.”

The director further spoke on what history could possible mean in the country.

“History is a constant interpretation of facts, I’m not saying it’s wrong. This is how history works. In India, till the British came, we believed in mythology, not in history. What’s our history? Gandhi ji today is a saint for us. He’s not a man, he is a great man (Mahatma). The sense of history in India is a moral tale, it’s not a factual tale. And who’s saying that’s wrong? That’s probably right. Why else is history relevant? Either it has to have a relevance to our society today so we make it relevant by making it into a moral tale.”

Over 300 People Detained At Chittorgarh During A Protest Against Padmavati

A protest rally against Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Padmavati at the Chittorgarh Fort on Sunday resulted in the detention of over 300 individuals. However, they were released later.

According to a PTI report, locals held a protest rally from Padanpole to the collector’s office but the police prevented them and 304 persons courted arrest, including 20 women. The action was taken under section 129 of CrPC (Dispersal of assembly by use of civil force) and those detained were taken to the Indira Gandhi Stadium and released.

The protest was held against Bhansali’s film, citing ‘distortion of history’ and an ill representation of the fabled Queen of Chittorgarh Rani Padmini.
