Parvathy TK-Starrer ‘Uyare’ Becomes The First Malayalam Movie To Release In South Korea

Malayalam film Uyare, directed by Manu Ashokan and starring Parvathy TK, will release in South Korea on May 19 with Korean subtitles, becoming the first Malayalam movie to release in the South East Asian country. The film which deals with the theme of acid attacks against women, released in theatres in Kerala on April 26.

Produced by Shenuga, Sherga and Shegna of Grihalakshmi Productions, Uyare is distributed worldwide by Indywood Distribution Network (IDN). The film garnered highly positive reviews from critics and the general audience alike, and is currently running successfully in centres in India and overseas, including Singapore and the UAE. The film written by Bobby-Sanjay also stars Asif Ali, Tovino Thomas, Siddique, Anarkali Marikkar and Prathap Pothen. According to a Firstpost report, it has already collected Rs 15 Crore worldwide.

Korea has always been one of the favoured markets of Bollywood. According to a Times Of India report, films such as My Name Is Khan and Three Idiots were two of the earliest Bollywood films to become commercial hits in the Korean market, collecting 2.6 million dollars and 3 million dollars, respectively.

Of late, a number of Korean films have been officially remade in Bollywood; these include Teen, Jazba and the upcoming Bharat. The last movie, starring Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif, is a remake of the Korean super-hit On Ode To My Father. It is said that Salman will also remake Korean film The Veteran this year.

Shankar’s Enthiran (2010) was the first Tamil film to release in Korea. In the past few years, the Malayalam film industry has been actively expanding its overseas presence. In 2016, Mohanlal-starrer Pulimurugan became the first Malayalam movie to release in Poland. Recently, Lucifer, starring the actor and directed by Prithviraj, become the only foreign language film to be in the ‘Top 10’ highest grossing films in the opening weekend in the UK.  In 2018, yet another Mohanlal-starrer Odiyan set a record by releasing in 37 countries. Uyare’s successful run overseas is special, since it is headlined by a female actor.
