Pavan, who plays the lead role in the film, released its motion poster on social media recently.

The Morgue is written and directed by debutant directors Mahesh and Sukesh. Speaking to Silverscreen India, Mahesh reveals that the film’s story is set in the span of a few hours – from one evening to the subsequent day. He notes that there are suspense and horror elements alongside some unusual twists in the film.

“Pavan plays the role of a man named Jose. He is the son of a business giant. During the Covid-19 lockdown, he happens to go to a party along with his friend Manu, played by Mohammed Shariq. The story follows the duo as they face a problem which leads them to a mortuary,” he adds.

According to Mahesh, who wrote the script along with Sukesh, the world of mortuaries has been unexplored thus far in Malayalam cinema. “There are many international films which are set in this location. We thought of using it as it is yet to become a trope in Malayalam cinema,” he says.

Mahesh adds that the team did a bit of research in order to understand how things worked inside a mortuary. They visited the morgue at the Thiruvananthapuram Medical College for this purpose. The team created the sets with all the original equipment used in a morgue, he reveals.

The Morgue also features actors Aarathi Krishna, Ravi Shankar and Kannan Nayar.

Mahesh says it was challenging to find producers for the film. However, producers Sandeep Sreedharan and Sreerekhaa were interested in the subject and gave them the go-ahead. The Morgue will be the first venture of their A World Apart Cinemas banner.

Filming began in September 2020 and The Morgue was shot over 30 days in parts of Thiruvananthapuram and at Chitranjali Studio. The film’s sound design has been handled by VG Rajen, who worked on the Kannada hit KGF. The music has been composed by Emil Mohammed, Kiran Maranalloor and Shine Thirumala.

Mahesh says the team is planning for an OTT release sometime in October or November.
